Through our long-standing presence in the defense industry, our engineers discovered that active warfighters are consistently being injured by the debilitating effects of improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, the signature weapon of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is especially prevalent in military vehicles that are ill equipped to protect occupants from this type of explosion.
Injuries to the legs and spine, along with prolonged and severe discomfort, are also being experienced by high-speed watercraft occupants. Available watercraft flooring solutions do not adequately mitigate the impacts and vibrations caused by various sea state extremes.
Leveraging our expertise in the field of blast and blunt impact mitigation, Team Wendy developed ZMAT™ Protective Flooring System. ZMAT™ is designed to reduce the occurrence and severity of debilitating lower-leg injuries by absorbing impacts and vibrations. Utilizing the unsurpassed energy-attenuating qualities of Team Wendy’s patented Zorbium® material, ZMAT™ reduces tibia loads by up to 73 percent while preventing fatigue and lowering joint stress.
To produce ZMAT™, we put the product through a number of rigorous tests. To test our vehicle flooring, we conducted mine blast simulations, high-energy impactor testing and MRAP live blast testing. In mine blast simulations, ZMAT™ offered a 73-percent reduction in lower leg forces compared to bare-floor, and outperformed the competition by 53 percent. The live blast testing substantiated our earlier results with 42-percent better performance than our competitor’s product. Our latest testing, high-energy impact testing, once again indicated ZMAT™’s superior performance. The optimized product was subjected to a foot plate impact of 3.35-inches in 6ms. In this test, ZMAT™ offered protection levels that exceeded industry-standard thresholds.
Shock cycle testing was performed to determine the long-term comfort of ZMAT™ boat flooring at various sea states. Referencing the ASTM Standard F1614-99 for Shock Attenuating Properties, we tested up to two and four times the energy level of a normal running movement. ZMAT™ outperformed competing flooring materials by more than 60 percent at all impacts levels, signifying increased comfort and lower risk of injury.
ZMAT™ consists of a Zorbium® impact layer, with a durable waterproof polyurea coating and our slip-resistant, durable tread surface. Team Wendy has the ability to tune the Zorbium® properties and overall material thickness to offer custom solutions for any application. ZMAT™ can also be produced in a variety of shapes, sizes and thicknesses to accommodate the floor of any vehicle or watercraft.
